Beating the Post-Ramadan Blues (and Preparing for Next Time

By Wendy Díaz

Are you feeling sad and even guilty now that Ramadan is over? For busy mothers especially, earning the rewards of Ramadan can seem like an unachievable goal. We can feel remorse for the time we lost, the pages of Quran that didn’t get read, the taraweeh prayers that we did not attend, the iftar dinners that weren’t cooked, and the heartfelt tahajjud duas never made. These feelings are known as the “post-Ramadan blues.” Read the full article to find out five ways to beat them back (and also prepare for the next time).

 Parenting Tip

After intense focus to maximize rewards during Ramadan, it is quite natural to experience the post-Ramadan blues. Rather than fretting, muster the energy to continue the good habits you nurtured and keep your iman strong throughout the year.

Build a Habit to Read the Quran Daily

By Sumayya Khan

Allah sent down the Quran to be a source of healing, mercy, purification for our sins, and a source of knowledge and wisdom. In times of distress, reciting it and reading its wise verses can help comfort us and guide us through our hardship. In times of happiness and ease, it is a reminder to thank Allah for the blessings He has given us. Let’s take the good habits we have attended to during Ramadan and keep up with reading and reciting the Quran regularly throughout the year. Here are six steps that can help.

Inspiration

“A word of advice to anyone who wants to change the world: Your family’s right upon you is greater than all other 7 billion-member of the world population combined. The admiration of a million people pales in comparison to the smile you put on the face of a parent, spouse, or child, and testify for or against you on the day of judgment. If you want them to remember you tomorrow, you have to be there for them today, so change the world and do your best to care for everyone, but don’t let your positive influence exclude the people who need you most.”

Sunnah Days to Fast Throughout the Year

By Heraa Hashmi

While Ramadan is a special time, there are ways to incorporate the blessings of fasting on a regular basis. The Prophet, peace be upon him, would fast, not continuously, but periodically, throughout the year. Fasting is another act of worship, and its reward is one promised by Allah - so one can only begin to imagine the magnitude of blessings. While one can fast any time of the year, there are days specifically mentioned that carry more reward should one partake in fasting.

Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Whoever fasts in the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days fasting in Shawwal has done as if he has fast for life."

Keeping our Iman Strong with Dhikr

By Candace Islaah Abd'al-Rahim

The majority of the scholars in Islam agree that iman or faith is not static; it increases with obedience to Allah's commands and decreases with disobedience. Acquiring iman, therefore, is a process. It does not penetrate one’s heart simply because one is a Muslim by birth or by conversion. Dhikr, the remembrance of Allah, goes beyond merely thinking about our Lord. Find out more about what to say, when to say it, and how we can use it to strengthen our iman.

Book Review: Emulating the Character of the Prophet Muhammad

By Miriam Mohamed

Throughout Ramadan we trained ourselves to be virtuous, disdaining vices and sins and replacing them with good deeds. Now that Eid and its celebrations have come and gone, it is time to reflect on how to continue the good habits and acts of worship throughout the year. One way to preserve motivation and reach this goal is to emulate the character of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, and connect it to new habits. And we found a wonderful resource in a beautiful new book by Abdur Raheem Kidawai’s called Blessed Names and Characteristics of Prophet Muhammad.
