Salaam,

Muslim families are struggling.

Our children face bullying in school, experience depression and anxiety (an even contemplate suicide) at greater rates than other faith groups. They feel disconnected from the masjid and most lack quality Islamic education. And in this void, many even have doubts about their faith!

We must take this challenge seriously and devote more resources to helping tomorrow’s Muslims today.

Fortunately, Sound Vision has a three-decade track record when it comes to this! We have been helping our youth become better Muslims, better neighbors, and better citizens. We also help Muslim parents become better parents and Muslim teachers become better teachers.

Sound Vision has 15 active initiatives that support Muslim youth. They range in scope from online classes and videos for pre-school and elementary students, to a crisis intervention textline, to parenting guides, to a manual for creative youth engagement, and more. These programs are designed by experts and require your urgent support!

Sunnahs of Expressing Love to Your Parents

By Bashir Oyetunji

Parents are often in the habit of communicating with their children above the importance of showing them love and respect. There is much evidence that speaks to this guidance in the Quran and the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. In the busyness of our days, it is also important for us to show this same gratitude and affection to our own parents. Here is a reminder about 13 ways you can also express love, affection, and gratitude to your parents.

 Parenting Tip

Alhamdulillah, we have nearly completed another Ramadan. There is still time to take advantage of lots of blessings that come with attention to worship and good deeds. This may be your last chance to push hard for those big rewards!

Quranic Guidance

An entire surah in the Holy Quran is devoted to what is known as Laylatul-Qadr, the Night of Power.

“Indeed, it is We Who sent this Quran down on the Night of Glory. And what will make you realize what the Night of Glory is? The Night of Glory is better than a thousand months. That night the angels and the holy spirit descend, by the permission of their Lord, for every decreed matter. It is all peace until the break of dawn.”

(Surah Al-Qadr, 97:1-5)

Ramadan Reset: Staying Fit during Ramadan

By Hernán Guadalupe and Wendy Díaz

Ramadan is a month not only to purify our hearts, but also our bodies. We should take advantage of this month to hit the reset button on our health and start fresh. Here are some ways we can stay in shape during Ramadan and model good behavior for our children and families. These will also be good habits to carry forward into the future, too.

“The month of Ramadan is superior to all other months, and the last ten nights are superior to the other nights.”

 Ibn al-Qayyim

Got a Minute? Make the Most of It!

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

The most valuable commodity we have in this world is time. We must make the most of the opportunities we are afforded. While we cannot be certain of how much time we have left, we can be mindful of how we spend it. That can be true of our intention to make the best use of these last few days of Ramadan. Here are some tips on how to use your time wisely.

Puerto Rican Empanadas

Empanadas have become a staple for Ramadan iftars and other community events in my family as we preserve our Latino culture while practicing Islam. These delicious meat pockets - also known as empanadillas - were front and center in my book entitled Eid Empanadas,  which is the story of Omar, a young boy who shared his culture and religion (and some empanadas!) with his elementary school classmates. We hope they can also become a tradition in your kitchen! (And you can also check out a review of the book below.)

Ramadan Around the World: A Book about Diversity and Inclusion

By Melissa Barreto

In Ramadan Around the World, the Ramadan moon guides us around the globe to peek at different cultural traditions. The book by Ndaa Hassan is beautifully illustrated with the colors, scenes, and vocabulary changing to represent 13 different countries. But we are also introduced to Muslim individuals living with disabilities and health challenges being unapologetically and seamlessly included in the season’s rituals, lessons, and festivities. The book would be a welcomed addition to any Islamic home library, especially for children and individuals who see themselves in the characters depicted. Read the full review here.
