Volunteering: Benefits of Service for the Entire Family

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

We have many opportunities for service in front of us everyday. They are present in our dealings with family in our homes and with strangers outside of it. It is our duty to attend to them and to help our children of all ages embrace them as well. In addition to the rewards we are promised through adherence to our faith and Islamic guidance, there are well-researched benefits of community service, too, including:

  • Teaching new skills
  • Increasing self-efficacy and self-esteem
  • Expanding our ability to empathize and be grateful
  • Strengthening connections to the larger community
  • Improving overall health and happiness

 Parenting Tip

Being mindful of the needs of others is a way of life. It starts with conscious thoughts that become actions and then eventually habits. Children learn these ways from their parents. Be sure you are providing a good example yourself.

Inspiring a Giving Attitude

By Umm Ahmed

As parents, nurturing a giving attitude in the hearts of our children is worthy of our time and attention. It is a matter of making a conscious effort to explore opportunities to help contribute towards the well-being of our family and community. And to have our children both witness and participate in these activities.

Here are six ways parents can help inspire generosity in our future generations.

  1. Normalize the act of giving.
  2. Model kindness.
  3. Create opportunities for giving.
  4. Make it a family activity.
  5. Keep your intentions clear.
  6. Be patient.

Taking Action to Protect the Environment

By Fatimah Zahra Khan & Zahirah Lynn Eppard

We are seeing with our eyes that global warming is leading to high levels of hotter temperatures which in turn lead to flooding, increased numbers and severity of storms, droughts and the increased destruction caused by the spread of wildfires. Allah has charged us to protect the world we live in and as a vicegerent or steward we must take this matter to heart. Learn more about the way that one Canadian group - EnviroMuslims - has taken the lead and how you can take action, too.

Adam’s learns about the hadith of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, that one of the people who will receive Allah’s shade and mercy on the Day of Judgement is “a man who gives in charity and hides it such that his left hand doesn’t know what his right hand gives.” Then he is on a mission to help Mom, Dad and little sister Aneesah around the house.
