Gentle Heart, Gentle Art: Connecting Jiu-Jitsu to Prophetic Teachings

By Wendy Díaz

Meet the Latino Muslim father who is working to revive Prophetic manhood through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Dr. Hernán Guadalupe is not a new face in the Muslim community, particularly along the East Coast, where he is known for combining physical training with spiritual and character development. An engineer by day and the owner of a martial arts gym by night, he dedicates his time to promoting health, discipline, and purposeful living among youth and families. As he explains, “My goal is to revive an awareness of grappling as part of our Islamic tradition and reconnect manhood with the Prophetic model. In a time when we have become more sedentary and less attentive to health, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu offers both practical discipline and a meaningful spiritual connection.”

 Parenting Tip

The U.S. Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment allows students to practice their religious beliefs in interscholastic athletics. In many cases, schools that receive federal, state, and local funding and even Athletic associations are typically required to provide religious accommodation for your child in on the team.

Richmond Team Ansars – 25 Years of Community Building and Abundant Good Deeds

By Mahasin D. Shamsid-Deen

Team Ansars is a Muslim Youth League that started in Richmond, Virginia 25 years ago in 2001.  But it is and has always been so much more.  Team Ansars describes itself as an organization that focuses on developing youth character and building a strong sense of community through competitive sports.  Team Ansars programs are grounded in core values such as discipline, respect, and teamwork, helping young athletes grow both on and off the field.

As Team Ansars observes two and a half decades of youth nurturing and community involvement, we set down with the co-Youth Director of Youth Services, Brother Umar Kenyatta and the present Director of Team Ansars, Tarek Alkebu Lan.

The Many Benefits of Outdoor Play for Children

By Sumayya Khan

Being shy or bashful, modest in dress, speech, and behavior is considered something archaic, even prehistoric today. Yet, this is a key virtue of Islam. It’s what distinguishes a person of faith and God-consciousness.

But it is particularly hard to be modest for young Muslims. Youth culture, especially in the last 60 years, has become marked by immaturity, along with licentiousness and sexual expression that laughs in the face of modesty. It is a whole package that glorifies dress showing off the body (especially for girls and young women), speech and songs marked by sexual innuendo and commentary, as well as approval of all kinds of sexual acts outside of marriage, not just sexual intercourse itself.

Hadith Inspiration

Narrated Aisha (RA), Ummul Mu'minin:

While she was on a journey along with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): I had a race with him (the Prophet) and I outstripped him on my feet. When I became fleshy, (again) I had a race with him (the Prophet) and he outstripped me. He said: This is for that outstripping.

Fitness for Reluctant or Non-Sporty Kids

By Sumayya Khan

We know that physical fitness is important for people of all ages, but what if we have a child who really balks at the idea of exercise? While many kids are eager to join sports teams or run around with friends outside, some are more sedentary, and others downright refuse to get off the couch. There can be many reasons why kids feel averse to physical activity, but with collaboration and creative thinking, you can probably find some agreeable ways to get their bodies moving.

If your child is resisting the idea of exercise, consider these possibilities.
