Eid-ul-Adha: A Legendary Celebration of Family

By Wendy Díaz

When we think of Eid-ul-Adha, the first things that come to mind are the Hajj pilgrimage, udhiya (sacrifice), and the blessed first ten days of the month of Dhul Hijjah. Eid-ul-Adha is a festival commemorating everything about the an important pillar of Islam - Hajj. But the historical foundations of Hajj are closely tied to a different kind of journey: parenting. The very rituals of the pilgrimage honor the sacrifices of both a father and a mother – namely Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him, and his wife, Hajar, may Allah be pleased with her. Learn more about this rich history in the full article.

The Prophet’s Last Sermon: An Amazing Teaching Tool

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered an important address known as The Last Sermon or Khutba Hajjatul Wida on the 9th Day of Dhul Hijjah, 10 AH on Mount Arafat in front of a large gathering of Muslims performing Hajj. It foreshadowed his death and provided a comprehensive guide to the foundations of our faith. As such, it is a wonderful teaching tool for parents to use to explore our rich Islamic history, connect hearts to our beloved Prophet, and also to review the guidance that we can rely on to be successful in this life and in the Hereafter. Take the opportunity to read it and share it with your family.

Quranic Guidance

“And (remember) when Ibrahim raised the foundation of the House with Ismail, (both praying), ‘Our Lord! Accept this from us. You are indeed the All-Hearing, All-Knowing. Our Lord! Make us both (fully) submit to You and from our descendants a nation that will submit to you. Show us our rituals and turn to us in grace. You are truly the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.’”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:127-128)
