The sister’s only session at the annual ICNA-MAS convention in Baltimore, Maryland, always draws a huge crowd, and it was no exception this year when it tackled “Is There Life after Divorce?” There was a panel of four speakers, three of whom were divorced Muslim women. Author Wendy Díaz interviewed two of them - convert Jacquelyn Crutchley and subject matter expert Dr. Suzy Ismail - to talk about divorce and its many repercussions. The biggest obstacle that makes it difficult for a child to successfully deal with changes in the family is conflicting relationships between parents. Children differ from one another in their reactions to divorce, but there are some reactions that are common. These include depressive symptoms, anxiety, anger, and lower self-esteem, which then impact aspects of their life psychologically, behaviorally, academically, and socially. Divorced Women Speak about Personal Growth

Due to social and cultural stigmas, stories of personal growth after divorce in the Muslim community tend to be scarce. While divorce can have a negative impact on families, it is not always the case. For some, divorce can bring relief and stability to those who are struggling.
