Key Lessons from the Story of Prophet Lut

By Umm Ahmed

As Muslim parents strive to raise their children with an unwavering commitment to their faith, they find themselves grappling with mounting confusion and stress related to a number of contemporary issues, most particularly the explosion of support for LGBTQ issues and lifestyles. We need guidance on how to strike a balance between living peacefully in the West while upholding the integrity of Islamic principles. On the topic of homosexuality, we can turn to the Quran for key lessons from the story of Prophet Lut, peace be upon him, and the people of Sodom.

Parenting Tip

Muslim parents are bombarded with displays of support for homosexuality in every kind of public space, form of media, and community setting. We must quickly learn about Islamic guidance on the matter and and how to protect our children and our rights in the process. In the first of a three-part series, we examine Islamic guidance on the matter of LGBTQ issues.

Navigating Differences: Clarifying Sexual and Gender Ethics in Islam

On May 23, 2023, more than 120 imams and scholars from across North America issued a public statement to clarify sexual and gender ethics in Islam. They are Muslim scholars and preachers representing a diverse range of theological schools who affirmed the right to express our beliefs while simultaneously recognizing our constitutional obligation to exist peacefully with those whose beliefs differ from ours. It was the first collective statement of its kind and is an important teaching tool within and outside of the Muslim community. To date, there are more than 300 signatories. It is a must read for all Muslim parents.

Inspiration

"It may seem like we are swimming against a rising tide with the amount of LGBT propaganda circulating on the media, entertainment, and social media, but we have the same right to respect and freedom of expression as any other citizen."

Wendy Díaz, Puerto Rican Muslim writer, award-winning poet, translator, and mother of six

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions by Muslim Youth

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

Parents are scrambling to insulate their children from age-inappropriate visuals and exert their faith-based opposition to these deviant lifestyles. And in the mix of it all, Muslim youth are caught in the crossfire, trying to figure out what’s the big deal, and even questioning Islamic guidance on the matter. Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi has taken to the minbar to provide details. He delivered a khutbah on June 2, 2023, titled: Why Muslims Shouldn’t Celebrate Pride Month and identified five questions he frequently hears from Muslim youth about LGBTQ matters. Those answers are summarized in the full article.

Islamic Guidance

"Say, ‘Not equal are the evil and the good, although the abundance of evil might impress you.’

So fear Allāh, O you of understanding, that you may be successful."

(Surah Al-Maida, 5:100)

Is Pride Month the New Halloween for Muslims?

By Wendy Díaz

Comparing Halloween to Pride Month may seem like a stretch, but like the controversial holiday of hocus pocus, Pride Month is a scary reality and a reminder that we are living as minorities in a society that is becoming increasingly permissive. Just as Halloween invites educators to decorate, celebrate, and incorporate this holiday into the classroom for the month of October, Pride Month means LGBTQ+ paraphernalia, literature, and lessons are being introduced into our children’s learning environment. As Muslims, we must be proactive in standing up for our own rights to uphold our religious beliefs and to educate our children with the values that we hold sacred.

Interesting Facts

Although the numbers of gay and lesbians in our community is small, they are a vocal and politically savvy group and that has managed to increase public support around LGBTQ+ rights significantly in recent years. Here are some interesting facts on the matter.

  • The share of Americans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) has been on the rise since 2012 and it is estimated that there are about one million same-sex couples in the U.S.
  • In 2001, 53% of respondents stated they believe gay or lesbian relations to be morally wrong, but in 2020 this number had fallen to 32%.
  • In recent decades, the most significant steps forwards for the LGBT communities were taken under the Obama administration.
  • 74% of young American adults support same-sex marriage.
  • Additionally, about half of surveyed people in 2019 believe that one is born gay or lesbian – a significant increase from 1977, when only 13% of respondents said the same.
