Planning a Family Vacation with the Grans: 7 Helpful Tips

By Wendy Díaz

Now that we are in the midst of summer break, many families are considering how to make the most of their time off. Some may plan day trips or staycations close to home, while others take advantage of the school-free months to visit faraway relatives or explore new destinations. For those of us blessed to still have our parents or grandparents in our lives, vacation plans may revolve around visiting them, or even better, bringing them along. Including our elders in family getaways can be a beautiful opportunity to strengthen intergenerational bonds. It also comes with unique considerations depending on their age, health, and physical ability. Factors such as mobility, accessibility, dietary needs, and rest schedules must be thoughtfully addressed to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience.

Grands- Great for Children

By Mahasin D. Shamsid-Deen

From a linguistic perspective the term ‘grandparent’ is meant to denote a generational difference with the context of adding importance to this ascendant.   It is a respectful way to acknowledge that these family members that came before us are perhaps wiser.  The siblings of grandparents are often referred to as grand aunts or grand uncles although many people will use grand and great interchangeably.  The ‘grand’ ‘great’ members of our families are indeed worthy of such titles and are a critical part of a Muslim child’s well being and development.  It is an awesome honor to be a grandparent, grand aunt or grand uncle.

How to Stay Connected with Grandparents over Long Distances

By Uthman Guadalupe

A regular phone call can bridge the gap between you and your grandparents. Although it seems simple, catching up regularly can help bring you closer together. If you cannot call too often, text to say good morning every day. It is always great to let your grandparents know that you are thinking of them. Additionally, with apps like FaceTime and WhatsApp, video calling is a nice way to stay in touch face-to-face. While it is virtual, it can be used to share experiences like a graduation or a holiday. Video calls also offer a wide array of fun with built-in games and filters. These activities make the calls more enjoyable and memorable. I have had hours of fun just trying out wacky filters with my friends and family.

Statistics On Parenting

Honoring Our Parents and Grandparents: Preserving Their Legacy Through Journaling

By Miriam Mohamed

In Islam, honoring one’s parents is not simply a recommended act—it is a divine command. Our parents and grandparents are the bridges to our past, the living connections to generations before us. Yet, in today’s fast-paced world, the wisdom, memories, and stories of our elders are often overlooked or lost. One beautiful and meaningful way to revive this Sunnah of connection, compassion, and gratitude is by documenting their stories through journaling.
