Muslim Children and Non-Muslim Friends: Dawah or Dilemma?

By Wendy Díaz

Muslim parents are often fearful about sending their children into public schools for a variety of reasons. One that tops the list is the dilemma of interactions with non-Muslim peers. It is quite natural to worry  about “bad apples” or troubled kids and those negative influences can be found in every school setting. But what if our children were the good influences that their classmates need? Read more about author Wendy Díaz’s personal experience and about how a solid foundation at home and knowledge of the basics of our faith can provide guidance to others along the way.

 Parenting Tip

Throughout time, Muslims have been commanded by Allah to share the message of Islam with others. Our daily interactions can speak volumes to teach others about Islam as a way of life. Learn more about this responsibility and how we can also teach these skills to our children.

Dawah in our Daily Interactions

By Sumayya Khan

Muslims have consistently been under a negative light in news and entertainment for the last 20 years. The onus has been put on ordinary Muslims to be ambassadors of Islam and it can be quite the heavy burden nowadays in North American society. There tends to be two prevailing sentiments: non-Muslims are either wary of or genuinely interested in our way of life. Nonetheless, we can give some dawah (invitation) with a few small actions every day as we go about our daily tasks at work, running errands, or visiting other public places. Read about this responsibility and how the entire family can get involved to make a difference.

Inspiration

“How we behave toward and around our children has much more influence on their character than if we only tell them about how they should or should not behave.”

Russell Kolts, professor of psychology and founding director of the Inland Northwest Compassionate Mind Center

TAQWA: The Essence of Dawah

By Umm Ahmed

Taqwa is essentially the foundation of our faith, without which even our obligatory worship rituals would be merely mechanical. Perhaps, this is the reason why the Quran stresses so much on the attainment of taqwa and mentions it in several chapters, with reference to seeking Divine guidance and ultimately earning Allah’s pleasure. Here are some ways we can bring our children to be more aware of our Creator.

  1. Through the names and attributes of Allah.
  2. Contemplating on these names and attributes.
  3. Counting the blessings of Allah.
  4. Instilling a love for Jannah in their hearts.
  5. Through our own actions.

Interfaith Dialogue: A Form of Dawah

By Miriam Mohamed

Interfaith efforts bring people of different religious faiths together for conversations and activity. These interactions can take an array of forms and possess a variety of goals and formats. These dialogues can unlock the power of religious traditions and provide inspiration and guidance. Since most non-Muslims have not had the opportunity to read the Holy Quran or learn about the Sunnah, life or sayings of our beloved Prophet Muhammed, peace and blessings be upon him, interfaith activities through local organizations are crucial to introducing Islam in its true form to those who have not been blessed with guidance of Islam. Read more about this important way to give dawah in the full article.
