9 Steps to Beautify Your Prayers

By Umm Ahmed

It is Allah alone who is worthy of our sincerest efforts to adorn ourselves inwardly and outwardly when we stand before Him in prayer. That said, it's important not to become disheartened by occasional imperfections as these errors remind us of our humanity before Him. Instead, we should view these moments as opportunities for self-reflection and growth. Here are some useful tips on how to attain Khushu in Salah, to help enrich our spiritual journey, foster fulfillment, and deepen our connection with Allah, to maximize our rewards and blessings.

 Parenting Tip

Ramadan is a special time for adults and children alike. While they might not fully appreciate the deep spiritual meaning, our kids are paying attention to what the adults around them make a priority. Enhancing your own worship also makes it a teachable moment.

When Exercise Is Worship: Strengthening Our Bodies during Ramadan

By Wendy Díaz

During the month of Ramadan, the last thing on a fasting Muslim’s mind is probably exercise. That is understandable, given the long fasting hours without food or drink, the extra night prayers, and early pre-dawn meals before the fast begins – all of which contribute to fatigue. Yet, amidst the before dawn-to-dusk abstention from food and drink, maintaining an active lifestyle remains important for optimal health. Embracing healthy habits not only benefits individuals but ripples through families and communities, promoting wellbeing and strength across generations. During Ramadan, there are many types of exercise to keep in mind.

My Beloved: Reflecting on the Names and Attributes of Allah, Part 2

By Laura El Alam

There are many resources that we turn to during Ramadan to enhance both our understanding, worship, and connection to Allah. Writer Laura El Alam has shared one of them - My Beloved: A series of reflections on the Names and Attributes of Allah in everyday life - in a four-part series. In Part 2 which focuses on “Reflections from Nature,” author Amaney Kazlak covers nine more of Allah’s names: Al-Khallaq, Al-Bari’, Al-Musawwir, Al-Jameel, Al-Badee’, Al-Mubdi’, Al-Azeez, Al-’Aliyy, and Al-’Azheem. Focusing on these attributes can bring about renewed respect and love for Allah that also motivates action to please Him.

Islamic Guidance

“The strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, but there is goodness in both. Be eager for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not be frustrated….”

(Sahih Muslim)

Reduce Waste of All Kinds this Ramadan

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

While Ramadan should be seen as a month of moderation, a look at food waste suggests otherwise. According to EcoMena, a not-for-profit group that raises environmental awareness in the Middle East, about one-fifth of the food purchased or prepared during Ramadan ends up in the waste bin. That practice does not live up to Allah’s commands or to our responsibilities as vicegerents or protectors of the planet. Here are some suggestions about how you can reduce waste of all kinds - food, water, and energy - during this blessed month. Make reducing waste a family affair!

Book Review: My Brother's Shield

By Miriam Mohamed

The Adventures of Adam and Anisah: My Brother’s Shield introduces young readers to Ramadan and fasting through the eyes of little Anisah. Her older brother Adam is fasting and, in Anisah’s eyes, he is a superhero with an extraordinary shield. Author Zahra Patel’s reference is based on the Prophet Muhammed’s, peace and blessings be upon him, analogy that fasting is a shield, reminding us to protect ourselves from anything which may harm us. The story provides a glimpse into overcoming everyday challenges and focusing on priorities. The last pages of the book also include discussion time questions as well as challenges and activity ideas. My Brother’s Shield would be a great addition to any home library with young children.

Ramadan offers special memories for families and many of them revolve around making and eating good food. As a special feature of our online children’s classes – Adam’s World Club and Colors of Islam Clubs – we have been sharing delicious and nutritious recipes that are also fun to make and encourage family bonding. These Healthy Pumpkin Bars are a favorite!
