Some Interesting Facts

According to a Pew Research Center study, fasting for Ramadan is common across all the demographic groups that make up America's Muslim adults. Here are some interesting details:

  • Similar shares of Muslim men and women (77% vs. 82%) say they fast.
  • There is little difference between Muslims who were born in the U.S. and immigrants (79% vs. 80%).
  • Roughly 9 out of 10 U.S. Muslims (92%) say religion is “very important” in their lives and observe the holiday.
  • Among Muslims who say religion is “somewhat important,” two-thirds (65%) say they fast.
  • Even among American Muslims who say religion is “not too” or “not at all” important, a substantial share (41%) say they fast.

Share Information about Ramadan with Your Child’s School

By Wendy Díaz

If you have children in public school, take the opportunity now to share information with teachers and administrators about Ramadan. While some districts and individual teachers may be savvy about different religious and cultural practices, it is not always the case. Here is a sample letter that you can download, modify, and use.

Online Resources

FYI’s Ramadan Toolkit - The Family & Youth Institute has put together a comprehensive resource that is filled with everything you will need to enhance your experience in Ramadan.
