By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

The exercise of making preparations for the blessed month of Ramadan has been likened to the efforts that are made to prepare for the arrival of a special guest. There would be details to take into consideration, cleaning and food prep, thoughts about how to maximize the time together, attention to meeting that special guest with your best foot forward. Here is a simple checklist that organizes the preparations into five areas: logistical support, household maintenance, time management, increased worship, and performing good deeds.

Just as the spirit of the winter holidays embraces all during the cold season in the West, so should the beauty and blessings of Ramadan. Islamic Guidance

Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

"Whoever observes fasts during the month of Ramadan out of sincere faith, and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven."

The Clear Quran Tafsir for Kids Is a Great Resource for the Entire Family

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

Muslim parents are responsible for teaching our children about Allah and our religion as a way of life. We use our knowledge, understanding, and the best resources we can find – scholars and teachers, tafsir or explanation, and tools like books, audio tapes, and videos – to assist in that process. Ramadan is a great time to focus attention on the Quran as a book of guidance and there is a two volume set – The Clear Quran Tafsir for Kids – that should be part of every family’s Islamic toolbox. Children will love the opportunity to learn more about and from the Quran and parents will also love the opportunity to learn alongside them.

Interesting Facts

One of the five pillars of Islam is fasting during the month of Ramadan. But it is important to understand that, in Allah’s wisdom and mercy, there are categories of people exempted from fasting including:

  • Children who haven’t reached the age of puberty are not required to fast, although some like to practice and participate in Ramadan activities.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers who struggle to fast are not encouraged to hurt themselves or their unborn or nursing children.
  • Those who are traveling are allowed to break their fast but are required to make up the days missed.
  • Women experiencing menses are prohibited from fasting but have to make up the days missed.
  • Those who are sick and cannot delay or refrain from taking medicine are not encouraged to fast and can make up the days when they return to a healthy state.
  • The elderly may have chronic illnesses and fraility that would make it medically difficult to fast.

It is important to understand whether a person who is exempt from fasting will need to make up the fast or compensate for missing it in another way. Check out those details in a nice video provided by Sh. Abdullah Oduro from the Yaqeen Institute called Pillar 4: Who Should Fast? (6:52)

Adam's World Videos: Adam's Attitude of Gratitude

Adam takes seriously his “Muslim job” of thanking Allah’s creation. Giving thanks to a bus driver, a good friend, or even parents is another way of showing gratitude to Allah for His blessings. The Arabic letter “sheen” for shukr and the English letter “G” for gratitude are featured. A beautiful nasheed by Dawud Wharnsby called “Daily Prayer” rounds out the lesson. (8:53)
