Hearty Foods to Get You through a Day of Fasting

By Umm Ahmed

The phrase "you are what you eat" is commonly used to convey the idea that the food we consume has a significant impact on our overall health and well-being. It follows then that the nutrients our bodies absorb affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally. This principle is particularly relevant during Ramadan, when our food choices have a significant effect on our energy levels. Learn more about foods that can help you make the most of your suhoor and iftar meals.

 Parenting Tip

In our second week of Ramadan, it is time to take an assessment of what is going right and what still needs work. Stay flexible and make adjustments to schedules,  activities, and expectations. And be sure to keep the needs of every family member in mind for the best possible outcomes!

What Women on Break from Fasting CAN Do during Ramadan

By Wendy Díaz

Mothers, and women in general, tend to get swept away in the exhausting Ramadan prep and are at greater risk of losing that enthusiasm once their “time of the month” rolls around. There are only three acts of worship women should not engage in while menstruating. Those are praying, fasting, and reading the Quran directly from/while touching the mushaf (or Arabic Quran). Rather than focus on the acts of worship that are out of the question, women can concentrate on the many things they can do to increase the rewards of this blessed month.

Islamic Guidance

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Every action a son of Adam does shall be multiplied—a good action by ten times its value, up to 700 times. Allah says: With the exception of fasting, which belongs to Me, and I reward it accordingly. For, one abandons his desire and food for My sake.”

(Sunan an-Nasa’i)

Special Considerations Related to Fasting for the Elderly and Ill

By Tayaabah Qazi

There are elderly Muslims and adults and children who are ill and may be advised not to fast during the month of Ramadan. It is important to remember that it is a favor of Allah upon us when he excuses us from fasting. He is the One Who designed our bodies and decided for us to have the health that we do. Learn how to be sensitive and helpful to friends and family who may have restrictions due to health conditions and about rewards to focus on other than fasting.

Inspiration

Ramadan does not come to change our schedules.

It comes to change our hearts.

Anticipating the Last Ten Nights of Ramadan

By C. Islaah Abd’al-Rahim

The beginning of Ramadan is a great time to prepare for the last ten days of this blessed month and to seek the rewards of that blessed night. Our daily activities should all be directed toward the ultimate goal - maximizing our worship and catching Laylatul Qadr. And as we get closer to it, our worship should build in intensity. Our training should become harder. Our workouts, more targeted and refined. Learn more about how to increase your clear intention and stay focused.

Harees (Slow-Cooked Meat Porridge)

Harees is one of the most popular traditional foods in the Emirati kitchen. This slow-cooked porridge-like dish is most often eaten during important family gatherings, such as weddings, and savored particularly during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Harees is known for being easy to digest, and hence it makes for a great iftar choice, knowing that your body needs those carbs and proteins right away!
