Teaching Muslim Children about the Harms of Bullying

One-third of global youth are subjected to bullying and the instances of faith-based bullying are much higher for Muslim children. There are many nuances to understanding what constitutes bullying, how to identify red flags that indicate that your child may be a victim (or a bully!), what to do to remedy the matter, and how we all need to take responsibility for changing the culture of bullying around us. The Long-Term Consequences of Body Shaming

Body shaming is degrading, and it often leaves negative consequences on a child’s physical, mental, and spiritual health. Although it can be a tool or fuel for bullying behavior, body shaming is also executed across culture and the media, both online and print. In some instances, body shaming can be done by parents and relatives, and this can be even more devastating when coming from people you love. It is important that parents educate themselves about what constitutes body shaming and what are the negative long-term consequences of it. Read more for those details.

A Look at Islamophobia through the Eyes of Muslims

By a wide variety of measures, instances of Islamophobia are on the rise across the globe. Negative impacts from this discriminatory practice have been documented by the United Nations, the European Union, and various nongovernmental organizations worldwide. A new report published by the University of California Berkley called Islamophobia through the Eyes of Muslims: Assessing Perceptions, Experiences, and Impacts opens a lens into the extent of the problem and how individual Muslims think about and respond to it. It is a must read for all of us.

Bullying Is in the Spotlight at AlRawabi School for Girls

A new Netflix series AlRawabi School for Girls takes an up-close-and-personal look at the challenges associated with bullying. The all-girls elite high school is fraught with contemporary struggles - dating, domestic violence, classism, mental health problems, alcohol abuse - and viewers get to observe the problem behavior from various perspectives. Book Review: Nusaiba and the 5th Grade Bullies

Opening up books can be a creative way for parents to open the door to important conversations about bullying. Nusaiba and the 5th Grade Bullies by Asma Hussein is an exciting and engaging book about the challenges of Islamophobia and bullying and to model the importance of self-acceptance, confidence, standing up for one’s self, harnessing our imagination, and to focus on what matters most in life. Interesting Facts

A survey conducted by the Council of American Islamic Relations California Chapter reveals that:

  • 42% of Muslim parents report that their child(ren) has experienced a bullying incident within the past year.
  • 53% of school children report experiencing faith-based bullying, nearly twice the national average.
  • 36% of students who wear hijab report they have had their scarf offensively touched or pulled off.
  • Teachers don’t always help students or sometimes act as bullies themselves.
  • Only 17% of students report the bullying incident to an adult, including their parents.

Bullying Prevention Toolkit - The Family & Youth Institute has developed a toolkit with lots of excellent resources on the prevention of bullying.

Seven Ways to Support Muslim Youth Facing Bullying - This short video produced by FYI follows the plight of Jameelah, a confident middle schooler who has recently based bullying at school. It includes warning signs and also strategies for helping support Muslim students who face bullying. (5:45)

Cyberbullying: 20 Cruicial Statistics for 2022 - As more of us spend more time on electronic devices and social media, it is ever more important to learn about cyberbullying. This is an eye-opening start.

Teaching Kids the Definition of Bullying - This article can help parents provide details so children understand all of the dimensions of bullying.

UN Declares March 15 International Day to Combat Islamophobia - In recognition of the increasing instances of Islamophobia worldwide, the United Nations has taken action to focus attention on the problem and how to stop it. Read more about it here.

Adam learns more about the Shahadah, the first pillar of Islam when Mama reports that one of her coworkers took their shahadah at the masjid. In this course, students will get a glimpse and learn to appreciate the incredible diversity of the Muslim ummah. Sr. Huda will be taking students on a journey around the globe to visit six different Muslim countries. She will be focusing on the geography, clothing and food from the region, local customs, and famous landmarks.
