Interesting Facts

Every single one of us has the same “time budget” – 24 hours per day and 365 days per year. But not all of us spend our time in the same manner. Here are some interesting facts about the use of time.

  • In all countries, the average leisure time for men is higher than for women (though there is some variance in the numbers).
  • A key factor driving these differences in leisure time is the gender gap in unpaid work. Women are responsible for a disproportionate amount of unpaid work and have less leisure as a result.
  • Living alone is particularly common for older adults. Today nearly 4 out of every 10 Americans who are older than 89 years old live alone.
  • There has been a clear increase in the amount of time parents spend with their children over the last 50 years. This is true for both fathers and mothers, and holds across almost all education groups and countries.
