As technology continues to evolve and play an increasingly integral role in our lives, it is essential that we, as parents and guardians, take responsibility for safeguarding our children from the dangers of the online world. The accessibility of the internet, along with the prevalence of social media, has created an environment where predators can easily exploit the innocence of youth, often without warning or obvious signs. Parents must be vigilant, have honest conversations with our children, and set clear boundaries for their online interactions.

Manage the 4 C's of Online Safety for Children

A major cause for concern, particularly for parents with younger children, is now online safety. Online risks for children can be categorized into four areas commonly referred to as the four C’s of online safety:

  • Content - includes sexual or pornographic content, images that display violence or cruelty, uncomfortable or disturbing scenes or characters
  • Contact - exposure to ill-intended characters who prey on young children
  • Conduct - personality-related problems including overstimulation, emotionality, anxiety, and other mental health-related problems 
  • Contract - unauthorized access to one's personal contacts, media folders, and the possibility of identity theft or fraud

Consider the following surprising cyberbullying statistics from DoSomething.org:

  • 27% of kids admitted to doing or saying something cruel to someone else online.
  • Approximately 37% of kids ages 12 through 17 have been the target of cyberbullying.
  • 60% of kids have witnessed cyberbullying (and most ignore it).
  • Girls are more likely to be both the perpetrators and victims of cyberbullying.
  • Only one out of 10 kids will tell their parents they’ve been bullied.

Adam hates making mistakes and gets into a tussle with Aneesah about striving for perfection. Mama and Dad both have much to say about that goal and how mistakes are the way all humans learn to be their best!
