Teaching Our Kids How to Conserve Water

By Sumayya Khan

Water is a precious resource and one of the many blessings that Allah has provided for us in this world. But it is easy to take for granted when it is in abundance. Around 1.2 billion people across the globe face water scarcity, and 500 million more are beginning to approach the same fate, according to the United Nations. Families can practice more sustainable ways to conserve water and recognize how water crises affect people around the globe. Learn more about both topics in the full article.

 Parenting Tip

Water is easy to take for granted when it is in abundance. But this essential component to life is not readily available to everyone and waste, irresponsible use, and climate changes threaten this precious resource further. Muslims should be in the front lines of protecting our water resources, and that work starts first in our homes.

Book Review: The Water Princess

By Laura El Alam

The Water Princess by Susan Verde is a picture book that will help Muslim families see water from a new perspective and appreciate this incomparable gift from Allah. The book is based on the real-life experience of model and international advocate Georgie Badiel, who grew up in Burkina Faso. As a child, Badiel fetched water with her grandmother, just as the story’s main character Gie Gie does. Reading this book is a wonderful way of seeing the challenges that individuals and nations face from the global water crises. And with that knowledge, inshaAllah, comes an increased attention to taking action.

Interesting Facts

Water is at the center of the climate change crisis. Climate change is exacerbating both water scarcity and water-related hazards (such as floods and droughts), as rising temperatures disrupt precipitation patterns and the entire water cycle. The latest statistics tell a troubling story.

  • About two billion people worldwide don’t have access to safe drinking water today.
  • Only 0.5% of water on Earth is useable and available freshwater – and climate change is dangerously affecting that supply.
  • Sea-level rise is projected to extend salinization of groundwater, decreasing freshwater availability for humans and ecosystems in coastal areas.
  • Water quality is also affected by climate change, as higher water temperatures and more frequent floods and droughts are projected to exacerbate many forms of water pollution – from sediments to pathogens and pesticides.
  • Climate change, population growth and increasing water scarcity will put pressure on food supply as most of the freshwater used, about 70% on average, is used for agriculture.
  • Water-related disasters have dominated the list of disasters over the past 50 years and account for 70% of all deaths related to natural disasters.
