Teen Challenges in a Social Media World

By Wendy Díaz

A common mistake parents make is comparing their experiences growing up to what their children are going through now. Not only are we living in a different time, but it seems like we are in another world altogether. Most of our children were born in the new millennium where technological advances abound. Nowadays, adolescent life revolves around social media. Helping our children make better decisions about their social media usage will hopefully help them steer clear of its harms, now and into adulthood.

 Parenting Tip

All of us need to deal with conflict in the normal course of our daily lives. Bullying takes conflict to a new place and Muslim children of all ages have the misfortune of being targets today. Learn what constitutes bullying and what you as a parent can do about it.

What Should I Do If I Find Out My Child Is Being Bullied?

By Summayya Khan

Bullying in schools, school buses, extracurricular programs, playgrounds, or even the workplace (if you have a teen) can happen to any child. It can take many forms ranging from hitting, shoving, name-calling, threats, and mocking to extorting money and possessions. Many times, children suffer in silence, attempting to hide the signs of their distress. Parents need to know what to look for, how to approach the matter if they suspect bullying is taking place, and the steps to take to stop the behavior.

Self-Bullying and Its Effect on Our Kids

By Laura El Alam

For some people, a steady stream of self-criticism dominates their inner dialogue. Their negative thoughts might be so pervasive that they barely notice them anymore. They might be convinced that they deserve the unkind thoughts that pop into their head. But we are not the only ones who suffer when we bully ourselves. Our children are observing us, and our unhealthy behavior can harm them, too. Learn more about turning the negative messaging into healthy self-talk and being a better role model for your children.

Book Review: Nusaiba and the 5th Grade Bullies

By Miriam Mohamed

Nusaiba and the 5th Grade Bullies by Asma Hussein is an exciting and engaging book about the challenges of Islamophobia and bullying. The story focuses on the importance of self-acceptance, confidence, standing up for one’s self, harnessing our imagination, and on what matters most in life. Opening up books can be a creative way for parents to open the door to important conversations about bullying. This one comes highly recommended.
