| | | | To B-Day or Not to B-Day: Teaching About Differences of Opinion By Wendy Díaz It never fails; when the month of Rabiʿ al-Awwal arrives, debates resurface about whether Muslims should celebrate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. Mawlid celebrations are common in many parts of the Muslim world, as well as in the West, particularly among communities that observe this longstanding, though disputed, tradition. For some, the occasion is marked simply by encouraging believers to learn more about the Prophet’s life or by increasing their salawat. Others participate in more elaborate festivities. Whatever the stance, the discussion often circles back to the significance, or lack of significance, of birthdays themselves. To B-Day or not to B-Day: that is the question. And it is a question that may trouble some of our children as they navigate majority non-Muslim societies where birthday celebrations are routine. |

| | | Mawlid Celebrations: Historical and Contemporary By Uthman Guadalupe The precise date of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birthday is debated, though the 12th of Rabi'’ al-Awwal is the widely accepted date. There are other candidates for the possible birthdate, such as the 2nd, 8th, and 10th, which all come from historical sources. The concrete evidence for the birthday of the Prophet (PBUH) lies in a hadith narrated by Ibn Qatadah, in which he says: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) was asked about fasting on Mondays. He said, "That is the day on which I was born and the day on which I received Revelation." (Riyad as-Salihin 1255) The earliest biographer of the Prophet (PBUH), Ibn Ishaq, says that the precise birthday of the Prophet was Monday, 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Year of the Elephant (for context, the Year of the Elephant is the year that Abraha, the ruler of Yemen, attempted to destroy the Kaa’ba with an army of Elephants. |

Shamsid-Deen As Muslims in America grow concerned with governmental policies that may have a negative impact on them as a religious minority as well at them as ethnic minorities and immigrants, we are reminded that oppression by the state has existed in every society. During the prophetic age, the Quraysh tribe found the new teachings of equality and the oneness of God that Muhammad, the prophet (pbuh) brought to be an intolerable message. Besides going against the societal beliefs, it was bad for business. The early Muslims in Makkah were subjected to the worst oppression. They were shunned and basically blacklisted in society, presented as a problem. The economic boycott imposed by the Quraysh was also devastating. When we look at seerah we see that this escalated to the torture and murder of Muslims, the greatest trial indeed. |

| | | Review: Muhammad, Legacy of a Prophet With some of the world's greatest scholars on Islam providing historical context and critical perspective, Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet tells of intrigue and faith, revolutionary ideas and bitter persecution, brutal war and brilliant diplomacy in an arid desert where tribal allegiance was often the only protection. Muhammad was orphaned as a child, but he was fortunate to be born into the powerful tribe of the Quraysh in the city of Mecca, a regional pilgrimage site and commercial crossroads. He became a successful trader based in this cosmopolitan center and married a woman who was a wealthy merchant. Yet as Muhammad prospered with the city, he saw that the poor were increasingly neglected and hedonism dominated the culture. |
