9 Valuable Lessons to Learn from the Earthquake in Turkey

By Zahirah Lynn Eppard

As parents, we are constantly seeking ways to teach our children about the world we live in. As Muslim parents, added to that responsibility is ensuring that they also see the world and their purpose in it from an Islamic lens. To accommodate both, we have to take advantage of teachable moments and the recent earthquake in Turkey presents a unique opportunity. Learn more about Islamic guidance in the Quran and Sunnah and take the time to reflect about the implications on your own life and the life of your family.

Parenting Tip

Children learn about the world organically by seeing, hearing, doing, and making connections. Parents need to take advantage of teachable moments that shed light on what we can learn about Allah and His creation. The recent earthquake in Turkey is one such opportunity.

Explaining Calamities and Disasters to our Children

By Candice Islaah Abd'al-Rahim

We, the people who witness the calamities, may attribute these trials to man's blunders, his emotional instability, his lack of spiritual guidance, or his inhumanity to his fellow man. We can even rationalize that human beings are just prone to behaving badly. But when the trial results from a so-called "natural disaster," who do we blame? More importantly, how do you reconcile the idea of a benevolent Creator with the One Who decrees a calamity? And how do we explain that apparent contradiction to our children?

Inspiration

“I know that grief can be paralyzing, and an overload of bad news can be numbing. But don’t let the magnitude of the earthquake distract you from the many ways you can be helping right now. ‎Every prayer, every donation, and every effort counts.”

Sheikh Omar Suleiman

Tie Your Camel and Trust in Allah

By Tayaabah Qazi

A Muslim by nature submits to the will of Allah and finds comfort in Him when going through trials. It is a sign of great and strong faith. The strength of faith in destiny and accepting death at its appointed hour should not lead us to a complacency toward preparedness in dealing with the fallout of natural disasters though. Learn more about how we can tie our camels and also place our trust in Allah.

Islamic Guidance

“And certainly, We shall test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to As-Sabirun (the patient). Who, when afflicted with calamity, say: ‘Truly! To Allah we belong and truly, to Him we shall return.’”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:155)

The Power of Dua

By Khalid Baig

Dua or prayer is the most potent weapon of a believer. It can change fate, while no action of ours ever can. It is the essence of ibadah or worship. With it we can never fail; without it we can never succeed. In the proper scheme of things, dua should be the first and the last resort of the believer, with all his plans and actions coming in between. This article was written some time ago but the reminders in it are timeless.

Interesting Facts

Here are some interesting facts about earthquakes:

  • The largest recorded earthquake in the world was a magnitude 9.5 (Mw) in Chile on May 22, 1960.
  • The hypocenter of an earthquake is the location beneath the earth’s surface where the rupture of the fault begins.
  • The epicenter of an earthquake is the location directly above the hypocenter on the surface of the earth.
  • It is estimated that there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes in the world each year. 100,000 of those can be felt, and 100 of them cause damage.
  • As far as we know, there is no such thing as "earthquake weather." Statistically, there is an equal distribution of earthquakes in cold weather, hot weather, rainy weather, etc. Weather can make rescue and recovery more challenging though.
