Families Create their Own Ramadan Traditions

By Laura El Alam

With all of its inherent beauty, the month of Ramadan does not need improvement or embellishment. And yet, when we celebrate the month with enthusiasm and special effort, we create a positive emotional connection that helps our families greet the month with anticipation year after year. Families in the U.S. often make extra efforts to celebrate Ramadan. Writer Laura El Alam interviewed several mothers to find out what was the most important tradition for them and their children.

Parenting Tip

Ramadan is nearly here! Now is the time to make preparations to organize activities of all kinds for everyone in your family. Attention to detail before the month begins can definitely help set the stage for a strong start and to achieve the maximum rewards.

Have You Seen It? Sighting the Crescent of Ramadan

By Candice Islaah Abd'al-Rahim

For Muslims in the West, determining the start and stop of the Islamic months is not straightforward. It is particularly filled with drama when deliberating about the start of Ramadan and the timing of the Eid-ul-Fitr holiday. The challenges have colloquially become known among some Muslims as the "moon-sighting wars." Regardless of whether we choose to sight the moon personally or rely on scientific calculations, it is important that we teach our children these Islamic traditions and make their observance family or community endeavors.

Inspiration

“We do not pray, fast, or give charity because Allah needs it, but because our spirits need to be in the presence of the Divine light to blossom. We are seeds, we are infinite potential hidden in the garden of a body, waiting to awaken through the mercy of Allah’s light.”

First Day of Fasting for a Child

By Tayaabah Qazi

Meaningful family traditions play an important role in religious identity formation of a child. Activities can help affirm a child’s identity by becoming a part of a larger community through shared experiences thus enhancing spiritual development. They can also have a positive effect in latter years on the individual’s civic engagements as an adult. Celebrating the first day of fasting can serve the goal of raising strong Muslim children, along with many other beautiful Ramadan traditions. Long-time educator Tayaabah Qazi shares memories of her own first fast and tips for making these upcoming days extra special for your children.

Islamic Guidance

Abu Hurairah said that Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“There has come to you Ramadan, a blessed month, which Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has enjoined you to fast. In it the gates of heavens are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and every devil is chained up. In it Allah has a night which is better than a thousand months; whoever is deprived of its goodness is indeed deprived.”

Interesting Facts

One of the five pillars of Islam is fasting during the month of Ramadan. But it is important to understand that, in Allah’s infinite wisdom and mercy, there are categories of people exempted from fasting. These include:

  • Children who haven’t reached the age of puberty are not required to fast, although some like to practice and participate in Ramadan activities.
  • Pregnant women and nursing mothers who struggle to fast are not encouraged to hurt themselves or their unborn or nursing children.
  • Those who are traveling are allowed to break their fast but are required to make up the days missed.
  • Women experiencing menses are prohibited from fasting but have to make up the days missed.
  • Those who are sick and cannot delay or refrain from taking medicine are not encouraged to fast and can make up the days when they return to a healthy state.
  • The elderly may have chronic illnesses and frailty that would make it medically difficult to fast.

It is important to understand whether a person who is exempt from fasting will need to make up the fast or compensate for missing it in another way. Check out those details in this short video by Sh. Abdullah Oduro from the Yaqeen Institute called Pillar 4: Who Should Fast?
